Sotto was built by a cross-discipline team who had spent enough time doing research — and watching researchers work — to understand what the tools were getting wrong. Human subjects research is a complete methodological system: literature, transcription, qualitative analysis, quantitative methods, mixed methods integration, reflexivity, writing. The available tools addressed pieces of it. Researchers were left to assemble the rest, across incompatible software, with data moving through systems that weren't designed for research contexts.

Sotto is the first system built for the full scope of human subjects research — not adapted from something else, not assembled from parts. Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods in one environment, governed throughout by the standards those methodologies actually require.
